    La traviata

A FREE-SPIRITED WOMAN DEFIES SOCIETY’S EXPECTATIONS AT HER OWN PERIL

The deck is stacked against Violetta, the ill-fated heroine of this well-loved tragedy—a courtesan trying to turn her life around, she falls for the romantic Alfredo, but illness and family meddling thwart her one chance at happiness. The buoyant music dances through party scenes and tenderly carries the heartbroken lovers through longing and despair. This stylish new production is designed by Tony Award–winner Christopher Oram and directed by Louisa Muller in her Dallas Opera debut.

Last year’s winner of the Emerging Stars Competition at San Francisco Opera, Chilean soprano Yaritza Véliz brings passion and power to the role of Violetta, and acclaimed Mexican tenor Javier Camarena sings the lovesick Alfredo. Featuring The Dallas Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

“Véliz [was]…a mesmerizing presence every moment she was on stage.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Camarena is melting and nuanced…his sound sunny and earnest. There’s no one better.”—The New York Times

La traviata is a co-production with The Santa Fe Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Garsington Opera

    Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel head into the forest in search of food—but they almost end up as tasty treats themselves when they start nibbling on the deliciously edible house of a very nasty witch!

Look for a happy ending and “larger-than-life puppets that steal the show in a fantasyland production that’s all sugar and spice.”—Los Angeles Times

With his vocal prowess and charisma, countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim “is an utter sensation” (Süddeutsche Zeitung); emerging star Elena Villalón has won scores of prestigious competitions; and Patricia Racette is one of today’s most riveting singing actresses who’ll eat up the stage as both the Mother and the Witch!

“A fantasy world that audiences will be happy to join.”—Los Angeles Times

Music Director Emmanuel Villaume conducts this production from LA Opera.

$25 tickets for children ages 6-17! (excludes Box seats)

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

    WORLD PREMIERE

Experience this world-renowned true story for the first time as an opera.

    “Visually dazzling”—The Dallas Morning News

Grammy Award–winning baritone, Lucas Meachem, stars as journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby who awakes from a coma unable to move or speak, “locked-in” like a diver at the bottom of the sea. With a mind as brilliant as ever, he writes a best-selling memoir dedicated to his children, blink by blink, with the only part of his body that he can move—his eye.

Like the memoir, the opera scenes move from his memories before the stroke, to his daily life being hospitalized in Berck-sur-Mer, and the flights of his remarkable imagination. The music for this inspiring story will capture your heart from the first note, composed by Joby Talbot, who wrote the film scores for Sing 2 and the soon-to-be released, Wonka.

Grammy® Award winner Lucas Meachem returns to Dallas in a world premiere debut, leading a staggering cast of opera powerhouses. Sasha Cooke lends her vocal “lushness” (San Francisco Chronicle) to the striking true story, along with Andriana Chuchman’s “glorious sound.” (The Washington Post) »See full cast
