    Benjamin Appl

“A vocal presence so arresting it almost seems hypnotic.”—The Irish Times

In its grand tradition of bringing Texas audiences today’s most important song recitalists, TDO proudly presents German baritone Benjamin Appl—revered for a voice “that sounds like he belongs to the last of the old great masters of song”…with “an almost infinite range of colors.”—Suddeutsche Zeitung

Appl—mentored by the legendary Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau—was named Gramophone magazine’s Young Artist of the Year in 2016. BBC Music Magazine praised his talent, writing, “Appl is not only a singer of boundless promise, he is already a great artist.”

This solo recital program includes a full lieder performance of Schubert’s Winterreise accompanied by pianist James Baillieu.

Please note: This event will be held at the Moody Performance Hall. Click here for location and parking details. Performance time is 1 hour and 12 minutes with no intermission. Program, artists, and prices are subject to change.

View the full program here or in the Flip Book below. Programs and artists are subject to change. You may also read the text translations for Schubert’s ‘Winterisse‘ here.

Masks are required for all guests in the lobby and performance hall. This event will operate at 50% of capacity to allow for socially distanced seating. The Moody Performance Hall will provide beverage services prior to the concert. Removing masks briefly to enjoy concessions is acceptable.

    VIVA DIVA! Starring Joyce DiDonato

    “Staggering, joyful artistry…a transformative artist!”—Gramophone

When it comes to captivating an audience, no artist outshines Joyce DiDonato.

Be there for an evening of vocal splendor and spirit as this Grammy Award-winning megastar performs Berlioz’s famous La mort de Cléopâtre (The Death of Cleopatra) and Jake Heggie’s mesmerizing Camille Claudel: Into the Fire. Based on the life of the renowned sculptress (and Rodin’s lover), this masterwork “compresses a tragic life of operatic dimensions into a song cycle of great beauty and emotional resonance” (The New York Times). Also featured: Beethoven’s stirring “Coriolan” Overture with The Dallas Opera Orchestra.

    The Bremen Town Musicians

NOTE: Performance cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Dallas Opera’s exciting new production, The Bremen Town Musicians, is an operatic version of the Brothers Grimm classic fairytale set to music by Rossini, Donizetti, Offenbach, Arthur Sullivan and Verdi. This children’s opera tells the tale of a rooster, dog, cat, and a donkey whose paths cross on the way to the town of Bremen.

Working together as a team to overcome difficult circumstances, the newly-formed Bremen Town Musicians celebrate the idea that friendship, cooperation, and respect for others is far better than facing our problems alone.

    Doctor Miracle

Note: The performance scheduled for March 21, 2020, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Georges Bizet’s romantic, one-act operetta about love and omelets was composed for a music competition when the composer (world-renowned for his operas Carmen and The Pearl Fishers) was just eighteen years old.

A youthful vitality permeates this story set in 19th century Padua, Italy, in the home of the Mayor, his wife Veronica, and his love-struck daughter, Laurette.”

She’s enamored of the ever-resourceful Silvio, an army captain, who dons one disguise after another to infiltrate the household, in order to win the hand of the girl he adores. Sound simple? Guess again! The classic storybook set and costumes were designed by Production Designer Tommy Bourgeois. This TDO production will be revived under the direction of SMU’s Hank Hammett and Dallas Opera’s Education Music Director and Pianist Mary Dibbern.

    A Dallas Opera Production

    Don Giovanni

Don Giovanni, the ultimate womanizer, has been thrilling opera audiences for years! Sex and danger run rampant in Mozart’s enduring masterpiece, showcasing the skills of Don Giovanni, who can talk his way into any bed and out of any hot water he may get into.

After the murder of the father of one of his many lovers, Giovanni’s arrogance is at an all-time high – as is the number of his enemies.

After many narrow escapes, Giovanni is finally confronted with an enemy he cannot outrun. Even backed into a corner, Giovanni never apologizes for his wrongs, leading to a particularly fiery end. With one of Mozart’s most popular scores, and the dashing Mariusz Kwiecien as the title character, this will be a production that can’t be missed.

    The Magic Flute

Fairytale or mystical allegory? Mozart’s masterpiece appeals on so many levels—and in 2019, Dallas will
be treated to the legendary Sir Peter Hall production that’s guaranteed to delight
    the kid in us all!

“A visually stunning, semi-Egyptian wonderland, populated by a mad menagerie of colorful beasts festooned in the zaniest of costumes.” – Variety

Come to the enchanted forest, where surprises are everywhere, and magic reigns supreme. Here, the intrepid Prince Tamino is saved from a dragon by the mysterious Queen of the Night—then dispatched to rescue her daughter from Sarastro, the formidable high priest. Good and evil battle it out as two young people find their way to love and enlightenment in a musically luminous masterpiece that’s both funny and profound.
