A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, the soprano has sung a wide repertoire throughout the United States, including several appearances at TDO: Micaëla/Carmen, Musetta/La bohème, and a concert with the Hart Institute for Women Conductors. She has consistently earned critical acclaim at Des Moines Metro Opera, singing Marie/Wozzeck, Juliette/Roméo et Juliette, and the title roles/Jenůfa and Rusalka. Later this season she returns to DMMO as Lisa/The Queen of Spades, after singing Matilde Neruda/Il Postino at Chicago Opera Theater. Previous successes include Gretel/Hansel and Gretel and Musetta (San Diego Opera), Donna Elvira/Don Giovanni (The Minnesota Opera), Rusalka and Violetta/La traviata (Arizona Opera), Rosalinde/ Die Fledermaus (Utah Opera), and Marzelline/Fidelio (Opera Omaha). Other roles in her stylistically diverse repertoire include Adina/L’elisir d’amore (Austin Opera) and Josephine/HMS Pinafore (Arizona Opera), Gartland sang numerous roles as a member of the prestigious Adler Fellow Program at San Francisco Opera, including Micaëla, Pat/Ann/Christopher Theofandis’ Heart of a Soldier (world premiere), Gerhilde/Die Walküre, Kate Pinkerton/Madama Butterfly, and Barbarina/The Marriage of Figaro (SFO mainstage debut). Previously, with SFO’s Merola Opera Program, she was featured as Suzel/Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz.
