The American tenor, whose other roles at TDO have included Guillot/Manon and Remendado/Carmen, sings an exceptionally varied repertoire. Successes in Baroque works include Jupiter/Semele (Opera Omaha) and Tenor Soloist/Messiah (the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s staged production). Ferguson has also been heard in Mozart (Basilio/The Marriage of Figaro, Los Angeles Philharmonic; Monostatos/The Magic Flute and Curzio/The Marriage of Figaro, both at the Metropolitan Opera; Ferrando/Così fan tutte, Aspen Music Festival). Among his many contemporary-opera credits are Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Palermo, Valencia), Philip Glass’s The Trial (Salzburg’s Landestheater), Ned Rorem’s Our Town (Central City Opera), Thomas Adès’s The Tempest (North American premiere, The Santa Fe Opera), and the Electrician/Adès’s Powder Her Face (New York City Opera). Prominent among Ferguson’s musical-theater roles is Candide (New York City Opera, South Dakota Symphony Orchestra). Highlights of his concert appearances include Janáček’s Diary of One Who Vanished at New York’s venerable 92nd Street Y and performances with the major orchestras of the BBC, Boston, Birmingham (U.K.), Houston, San Francisco, Washington, and Mostly Mozart.
