The Chinese bass, an alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019 as Sarastro/The Magic Flute, returning as Masetto/Don Giovanni. He has also appeared at Opera Philadelphia as Colline/La bohème and Sarastro. Chen debuted in Europe at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Alaska Joe/Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Highlights of recent seasons also include debuts at The Santa Fe Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City (Rigoletto), Washington National Opera (The Elixir of Love), the Lincoln Center Festival (Mieczysław Weinberg’s The Passenger), and the Bard Music Festival (Dvořák’s Dmitrij). Among Chen’s leading roles with his home company, Houston Grand Opera, have been Sarastro, Rossini’s Dr. Bartolo, Oroveso/Norma, Ferrando/Il trovatore, and Hunding/Die Walküre. Another Houston role, Mozart’s Dr. Bartolo/The Marriage of Figaro, has been heard with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts. He has also sung Mozart’s Figaro with Opera Saratoga. Concert appearances include the Verdi Requiem (Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Chorus) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra).
