Baritone Michael Mayes enjoys a thriving career with theaters throughout the United States and Europe. He is known for his acclaimed portrayal of Joseph De Rocher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking with theaters including Washington National Opera, Teatro Real, New Israeli Opera and the Barbican. Other 21st century operas Mayes has championed include Manfred in Out of the Darkness (Music of Remembrance), Great Scott (Dallas Opera and San Diego Opera), the title role in Nixon in China (Staatsoper Stuttgart), Sweeney Todd (The Atlanta Opera and Bergen Philharmonic), Beck in Everest (Lyric Opera of Kansas City and The Barbican), Starbuck in Moby Dick (Pittsburgh Opera) and Older Thompson in Glory Denied (Nashville Opera, Opera Memphis, The Atlanta Opera and Fort Worth Opera). Mr. Mayes recently moved deeper into dramatic repertoire, including the title role in Rigoletto (Houston Grand Opera and Boston Lyric Opera), Wozzeck (Des Moines Metro Opera), Conte di Luna in Il trovatore (Central City Opera and Seattle Opera) and Alfio/Tonio in Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Madison Opera, Seattle Opera and Boston Lyric Opera [Pagliacci only]). In 2020-2021 he takes the stage at Houston Grand Opera as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music, and debuts with multiple other companies TBA.
