The mezzo-soprano, who has also sung Marcellina at LA Opera, English National Opera, Opera Philadelphia, and Arizona Opera, returns to TDO, where previously she was heard in Becoming Santa Claus (world premiere). Later this season she is scheduled to star as Mrs. Lovett/Sweeney Todd at Des Moines Metro Opera). Recently she has portrayed Mrs. Jones/Street Scene (Opéra de Monte-Carlo); appeared in Philip Venables’ 4.48 Psychosis (Strasbourg’s Opéra National du Rhin) and Emma-Ruth Richards’ The Sail of a Flame (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra); and made her Wigmore Hall, Ravinia Festival, and Buxton Festival solo recital debuts. Among other recent operatic successes are Monstrous Child (Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre); Susanna/The Ghosts of Versailles and Berta/The Barber of Seville (LA Opera), Ruth/The Pirates of Penzance (English National Opera), Maddy/Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers (Florentine Opera), and Jenny/Oliver Knussen’s Higglety Pigglety Pop (Aldeburgh Festival, London’s Barbican Centre). Schaufer has also appeared at Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet, Geneva’s Grand Théâtre, the Hamburg Staatsoper, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Washington National Opera, among many other companies.
