Praised for his “smooth baritone” by the Texas Classical Review, Joseph Canuto Leon is a Mexican-American baritone based in the Dallas Metroplex. Originally from Des Moines IA, Joseph began his career with contracts from The Dallas Opera, American Baroque Opera, Opera on the James, Opera in the Rock, Russian Opera Workshop, Opera in Concert, and Diversitά Opera. Some of his favorite recent roles include the titular role in Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny, Onegin, Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata, Belcore in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff. In the 2021-2022 season Joseph returns to The Dallas Opera as an Education and Outreach Young Artist and also joins the roster of American Baroque Opera, where he will perform Polyphemus in Handel’s Acis and Galatea. Joseph is a graduate of The University of North Texas where he received his MM in 2017 and Iowa State University where he graduated with his BM in 2013.
