“Impressive coloratura soprano” (The New York Times) Elizabeth Sutphen has garnered praise for her sparkling voice and her ability to “soar deftly through stratospheric trills and arpeggios” (Financial Times). Also praised as “Exquisite” (The Guardian) for her debut at Glyndebourne Festival Opera as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Ms. Sutphen’s Texan house debut came last season as Faustina in the Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere of Tarik O’Regan and John Caird’s The Phoenix.
The 2019-2020 season brought Ms. Sutphen back to Houston Grand Opera for her role debut of Gilda in Rigoletto, as well as a return to Oper Frankfurt in her first Rossini heroine role, Lisetta in La gazzetta, to great critical acclaim. Ms. Sutphen was slated to make her Dallas Opera debut as the voice from heaven in Don Carlo, Des Moines Metro Opera debut as La Folie in Platee, and was scheduled to return to Oper Frankfurt as the charming Philine in Mignon, though those productions were cancelled due to COVID-19.
