The American bass-baritone (TDO debut) performs a repertoire encompassing 50 roles in a wide variety of styles, from Mozart to contemporary opera. Recognized as one of today’s premier exponents of basso buffo repertoire, Travis is sustaining the tradition of three legendary artists with whom he studied and worked: Italo Tajo, Paolo Montarsolo, and Renato Capecchi. He has appeared at many prestigious houses, among them Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, and San Francisco Opera; the major companies of Houston, Santa Fe, Turin, Berlin, and Tel Aviv; Spoleto Festival USA and the Saito Kinen Music Festival. He recently returned to Glimmerglass Opera for The Barber of Seville, West Side Story, and Silent Night; San Francisco Opera for the Sacristan/Tosca and Benoit/Alcindoro/La bohème; The Minnesota Opera for Nino Rota’s/The Italian Straw Hat; and The Santa Fe Opera as Don Alfonso/Così fan tutte. The bass-baritone created the role of Louis/William Bolcom’s A View from the Bridge (Lyric Opera of Chicago), which was released on CD. He can be seen on DVD in Manon Lescaut (Met) and Capriccio (San Francisco Opera).
