In 2020 the baritone (TDO debut) made a company and role debut with Kentucky Opera as Count Almaviva/The Marriage of Figaro. The previous year he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in Der Rosenkavalier. Future company debuts include LA Opera and Opera Omaha. Previous seasons have included performances with Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Atlanta Opera as Riff/West Side Story, a portrayal also seen at Houston Grand Opera and the Glimmerglass Festival. Among Vu’s other Glimmerglass roles have been Schaunard/La bohème, The Happy Prince/Wilde Tales, and the Jazz Trio Baritone/Trouble in Tahiti. He has also portrayed Alcée/Charles Gounod’s Sapho (Washington Concert Opera), Moralès/Carmen (San Diego Opera), Schaunard/La bohème and the Second Apprentice/Wozzeck (both at Des Moines Metro Opera). A former Grand Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Vu is an alumnus of young-artist programs at Pittsburgh Opera (where he performed nine stylistically diverse roles, from Berardo/Handel’s Riccardo Primo to Leo Stein/Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27), the Glimmerglass Festival, The Santa Fe Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Music Academy of the West.
