The American bass, who is reprising a role he previously sang at Portland Opera, debuted at TDO as Antonio/The Marriage of Figaro. Among his recent successes have been role debuts as Alidoro/La cenerentola (Seattle Opera), Raimondo/Lucia di Lammermoor (Lyric Opera of Kansas City), and Zuniga/Carmen (Master Voices at Lincoln Center). Lau’s other appearances in major roles have also included Ferrando/Il trovatore (Seattle), Oroveso/Norma (Salt Lake City), Sarastro/The Magic Flute (Louisville), Berardo/Handel’s Richard the Lion-Heart (St. Louis), and Kobun Chino Otogawa/The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs (Seattle). Appearances in concert repertoire have recently included Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, both with San Francisco Symphony, and Messiah with the Oratorio Society of New York and Musica Sacra. Lau won First Prize in the 2016 Jensen Vocal Competition and Top Prize in the 2015 George London Competition. He was also a finalist in the 2016 Dallas Opera Competition. The bass is an alumnus of the prestigious summer young-artist programs of San Francisco Opera, the Aspen Opera Theater, and Santa Fe Opera.
