The soprano, who debuted at TDO as Papagena/The Magic Flute (2019/20), triumphed in the title role/Lucia di Lammermoor in 2017, stepping in on less than two hours’ notice to perform the entire run at Utah Opera. That company has presented Rethwisch in a wide repertoire, extending stylistically from the First Lady/The Magic Flute to Anna Sørensen/Kevin Puts’s Silent Night to Controller/Flight. Among her other important successes have been Musetta/La bohème and soprano soloist/Messiah, marking her return to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (where she previously appeared in Brahms’s Requiem and Saariaho’s Leino Songs); excerpts from works of Offenbach for her Washington Concert Opera debut; Drusilla and Valletto/The Coronation of Poppea in Fort Worth Opera’s workshop of Jim Lowe’s new arrangement of Monteverdi’s opera; and a company and role debut as Mabel/The Pirates of Penzance with Intermountain Opera Bozeman. Rethwisch joins the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for Akhnaten in the 2021/2022 season. A three-time regional finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Rethwisch is a former resident artist with Tri-Cities Opera and an alumna of the prestigious young-artist programs of The Santa Fe Opera, Chautauqua Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera.
