    DALLAS, August 21, 2017 – The Dallas Opera is seeking women and men to perform on stage with world class opera singers in a production of
    biblical proportions, SAMSON & DALILA by Camille Saint-Saëns. The production opens on Friday, October 20, 2017 for five performances
    in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, ending on November 5, 2017. Supernumeraries (opera’s fancy term for “extras”) must be able to participate in all five performances, as well as take part in several rehearsals. No singing is required and a small stipend will be provided.

    Supernumeraries will be used in crowd scenes featuring biblical roles as:

    • Acolytes  Samson_Final (427x640)
    • Soldiers
    • Philistines
    • Hebrews
    • The Child

    Some supernumeraries will be used in the famous bacchanale scene. Certain men may be asked to appear shirtless in the production.  

    Those wishing to participate must first email supers@dallasopera.org for more information by September 15, 2017.  The audition will take place on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at The Dallas Opera Karayanis Rehearsal Production Center located adjacent to Fair Park at 4301 S. Fitzhugh, Dallas, TX  75210 (follow signs for Gate 12, parking lot entrance off Gaisford St.).

    THE DALLAS OPERA 2017-2018 SEASON MAINSTAGE INFORMATION

    The Dallas Opera celebrates its Sixty-First International Season in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Dallas Arts District. Evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 2:00 p.m. unless otherwise stated.  English translations will be projected above the stage at every performance and assistance is available for the hearing impaired.  With the exception of FIRST NIGHT, The Joy and Ronald Mankoff Pre-Opera Talk will begin one hour prior to curtain, at most performances.

    AUXILIARY MALE CHORUS FOR MOBY-DICK!  

    AUDITION DATE/TIME:

    Sunday, June 5, 2016, 2:00-5:00 p.m.

                DALLAS, TX, May 12, 2016 – The Dallas Opera is pleased to invite talented local male singers to audition for the company’s Auxiliary Male Chorus for the production of Moby-Dick by Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer.  This is an excellent opportunity to perform onstage in a paid, professional ensemble, with world-class singers in the magnificent Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center!

                The Dallas Opera is seeking men in all voice categories. Back by popular demand, Moby-Dick has been met with thunderous applause around the world after its successful Dallas Opera premiere in 2010. Based on the Herman Melville epic tale of Captain Ahab’s obsession with the great white whale, Moby-Dick features an incredible cast, stage direction by Leonard Foglia and will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Emmanuel Villaume, TDO’s Music Director.

                There are six performances of Moby-Dick scheduled for November 4, 6 (matinee), 9, 12, 18, 20 (matinee). Music rehearsals will begin in early August and staging rehearsals in early October. There are occasional weekend-day rehearsals and matinee performances; however, rehearsals are generally conducted in the evening.

    AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • One operatic aria or art song in a language other than English. Italian, German, French or Russian are highly encouraged. Choristers may also offer an additional piece in English if they feel it shows their voice to better advantage.
    • Choristers may be required to perform a rhythmic exercise, as well as sight-read, at the audition.

    To schedule an audition, send a resume and headshot to Ahne Schield at ahne.schield@dallasopera.org.  Audition times will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis.     Audition Announcement – Role of “Miles” (Boy) in The Turn of the Screw!

    DALLAS, May 11, 2016 – The Dallas Opera is holding auditions for the role of “Miles” in the acclaimed Glyndebourne production of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw opening on March 17, 2017. It is a rare opportunity to perform on stage with world-class artists Emma Bell, William Burden and Dolora Zajick, as well as Principal Guest Conductor Nicole Paiement.

    The Turn of the Screw is a dark and gripping tale based on the novella by Henry James. “Miles” is approximately 10-years old and characterized as small, smart and savvy for his age, well-mannered yet possessing a wicked streak.           

    Rehearsals begin in Dallas, Texas on February 20, 2017 culminating in four performances on March 17, 19 (matinee), 22, and 25, 2017 in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

    Though no union affiliation is required, the performer will be offered an American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) Contract and compensated accordingly.

    The audition will take place at The National Opera America Center (The Rehearsal Hall) located at 330 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001. Local auditions will be coordinated on a per-case basis. (Local boy sopranos are encouraged to submit their materials and specifically request an audition time in Dallas).

           AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Perform an excerpt from The Turn of the Screw, which will be provided upon audition confirmation
    • An additional prepared song that demonstrates range and ability may be offered.
    • Copy of headshot and resume (including height, weight, and age).

                DALLAS, TX, January 8, 2016 – The Dallas Opera is pleased to invite talented local dancers, actors and supernumeraries to audition for SHOW BOAT, which opens Friday, April 15 and runs through Sunday, May 1, 2016.  This a wonderful opportunity to perform with magnificent opera stars and work with excellent directors at the amazing Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center!

    Performers needed are Caucasian ensemble dancers, the acting roles of Mrs. O’Brien, Sheriff/Maitre D’, and Young Kim and supernumeraries (non-singing, non-speaking roles). Auditions will be held as follow:

    The Dallas Opera is presenting the Francesca Zambello production of SHOW BOAT, with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. SHOW BOAT will be conducted by Dallas Opera Music Director Emmanuel Villaume with Alexander Rom, chorus master.

    There are six performances of SHOW BOAT scheduled for April 15, 17, 20, 23, 29 & May 1, 2016. The performers (supernumeraries excluded) will be compensated for rehearsal time, as well as a per-performance fee.

     CASTING DETAILS

     ACTORS:

    • Young Kim: Caucasian, Child Actor/Singer. Looks 8-10 yrs old, speaks and sings in a duet with Ravenal and a trio with Ravenal and Magnolia.
    • O’Brien: Mature Caucasian female with a good Irish accent. No singing required
    • Sheriff Vallon/Maître D’: 30-40 yrs old. Good Ol’ boy, imposing “bubba” type. Caucasian male. No singing required.

    SUPERNUMERARIES:

    • Older Kim: Caucasian Female
    • Foreman/Hotel Worker: 40 yrs old. A conventionally handsome, strong, Caucasian leading-man type. Helpful to have stage combat skills; fights with Pete. No singing required.
    • African American Children: 5 Boys, 4 Girls
    • Caucasian Children: 2 Boys, 1 Girl


    HOW TO AUDITION

    Dancer Requirements:
    Applicants should have a technical ballet background who can perform the Charleston, musical theater, and vaudeville styles of dance. Women, please bring ballet shoes and character heels. Men, please bring ballet shoes and character/jazz shoes. Dancers should come prepared to take a ballet barre and audition with a ballet combo. The choreography will be taught as a whole group with small groups to follow.


    Actor Requirements:

    Young Kim: Prepared monologue and a song that demonstrates range and ability. Call backs for this role should be prepared to learn “Why Do I Love You,” taught by one of the music staff.

    Mrs. O’Brien & Sheriff Vallon/Maître D’: Two contrasting monologues for the audition. Reading from sides for the call back.

     

    SUPERNUMERARIES

    Supernumerary requirements:

    Adults: Men and Women together, improvisational scene with Stage Director.

    DALLAS, TX, August 12, 2015 – The Dallas Opera is pleased to invite talented local singing artists to audition for the company’s Auxiliary Chorus for the 2015-2016 Season.  This a wonderful opportunity to perform onstage in a paid, professional ensemble before a live audience in the magnificent Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center!

    Singers are needed for both a mainstage production as well as a unique concert stage opportunity:

    SHOW BOAT

    Open auditions for African-American singers in all voice categories—especially mezzo-sopranos and tenors—who seek positions in the company’s choral ensemble for the 2015-2016 season production of SHOW BOAT, with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. TDO is presenting the Francesca Zambello production of SHOW BOAT, conducted by Dallas Opera Music Director Emmanuel Villaume with Alexander Rom, chorus master.

    There are six performances of SHOW BOAT scheduled for April 15, 17, 20, 23, 29 & May 1, 2016. Music and staging rehearsals for the African-American choral ensemble will immediately precede the performance period and will begin in January 2016.

    SYMPHONY NO. 13 in B flat minor, “BABI YAR” by Dmitri Shostakovich

    Open auditions for baritones and basses seeking chorus positions in The Dallas Opera/AT&T Performing Arts Center presentation of SYMPHONY NO. 13 by Dmitri Shostakovich (sung in Russian) to be presented in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Rehearsals will begin in January 2016. This one-time Classical Criterion Series performance will feature The Dallas Opera Orchestra conducted by Music Director Emmanuel Villaume with Alexander Rom, chorus master.

    Audition Requirements for new or Auxiliary Choristers:

    Applicants must have two memorized selections to offer, including one aria or art song in English and one in another language, preferably Italian, French, German, or Russian. You may also be asked to sight-read or perform a rhythm exercise. An accompanist will be provided, but will not be available to rehearse with you prior to your audition. Applicants must provide legible hard copies of their selections in the correct key for the pianist. Applicants are required to prove that they have legal permission to work in the United States of America.

    Rehearsals:

    Rehearsals begin in August 2015 and continue through the end of The Dallas Opera season in the spring. There are occasional weekend-day rehearsals and matinee performances; however, rehearsals are generally conducted in the evening.
