Silvio, a resourceful captain in the army, has fallen in love with Laurette, the Mayor of Padua’s daughter. The Mayor forbids Laurette to speak to Silvio, even going so far as to hire a new servant, Pasquin (Silvio in disguise), to replace the servant he fired for passing notes between the two young lovers. Disguised as Pasquin, Silvio earns the trust of the Mayor and offers to demonstrate his culinary skills by making an omelet for the family. The Mayor discovers Silvio and orders him out of the home. Later, a letter from Silvio is delivered to the Mayor confessing that the omelet was “poisoned.” With no one else to turn to, the Mayor calls on Doctor Miracle to create a cure for the poisoned omelet. Doctor Miracle (again, Silvio in disguise) agrees to provide the antidote in exchange for Laurette’s hand in marriage. The Mayor is upset to discover that Doctor Miracle is Silvio, but eventually joins in the celebration of Laurette’s happiness.
Students learn what it takes to create an opera and the many STEAM-based job opportunities in the field through a 20-minute workshop with Dallas Opera teaching artists. Following the workshop, students see it all come together in a 30-minute digital performance of Doctor Miracle, adapted for screen.
