Jeff Tang is a composer, lyricist, and creative producer, whose artistic practice investigates the evolution of the historical cultural narrative through music and theater. Commissions include New York’s Leviathan Lab, the NYU Write/Act Festival, Music Institute of Chicago, Theatre Latte Da (Minneapolis), St. Ann’s School (Brooklyn), Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, and Rainn Wilson’s SoulPancake. A 2020 Resident Artist and Board member of Sokoloff Arts at Town Stages, Tang has been a Summer Labs Artist in Residence at National Sawdust and a Composition Fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He is an alumnus of the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio, Prospect Theater Company’s Musical Theater Lab, and the PlayLabs Festival at the Playwrights Center. Tang is Executive Creative Producer of Real Magic, which he co-founded with Esperanza Spalding in 2018 to produce Iphigenia, a new operatic collaboration between Spalding and Wayne Shorter. Other roles include Consulting Producer at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; Associate Producer of NationalSawdust+, an innovative performance and conversation series at the grassroots artist-driven space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; and as a member of the Brooklyn-based creative studio Peoplmovr. Earlier in his career, Tang served as Assistant Producer on the Metropolitan Opera’s Media & Presentations team an as production manager of the Met’s Summer Recital Series and the Summer HD Festival in Lincoln Center Plaza.
