Among the acclaimed American director’s opera productions are Dido and Aeneas (TDO debut), Porgy and Bess (Houston Grand Opera, subsequently TDO and many other companies, also on Broadway), The Magic Flute (San Francisco Opera), Tosca (The Santa Fe Opera), and Street Scene (New York City Opera). His more than 35 other Broadway productions include All My Sons, Carousel, Damn Yankees, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Catch Me If You Can, The Nance, It’s Only a Play, The Coast of Utopia (Tony Award) The Front Page, Two Shakespearean Actors, Henry IV (Tony Award), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Into the Woods, The Full Monty, and Hairspray (Tony Award). Productions for San Diego’s Old Globe include Henry IV, Much Ado About Nothing, Oleanna, Damn Yankees, King Lear, Ghosts, Hamlet, Uncle Vanya, the world premiere of Terrence McNally’s Up in Saratoga, and works by A.R. Gurney, Tom Dulack, and Stephen Medcalf. For television, O’Brien has directed Grace Under Fire and many productions for PBS’s American Playhouse series.
