The American director, a native of New York City, is Artistic Director of the Willow Cabin Theater Company and Director of the Aspen Opera Theater Center (where he has directed classics including Cavalli’s rarely performed Eliogabalo and Giasone, plus many new works). He has directed the New York premieres of plays by Derek Walcott, Israel Horovitz, Terence McNally, Leonard Melfi, Louise Page, and Tennessee Williams. Berkeley has also directed productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Library of Congress, Williamstown Theater Festival, Old Globe Theater, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, and the Spoleto and Ravinia festivals. He directed Thomas Adès’s Powder Her Face and Christopher Theofinidis’s The Cows of Apollo for Brooklyn Academy of Music, as well as eight productions at The Juilliard School, where he has been on the faculty since 1987. Berkeley is also a faculty member of the Circle in the Square Theater School and guest faculty for the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He has been a guest professor at Carleton College, Princeton University, and Williams College.
