The tenor has appeared in more than 100 roles in opera, operetta, musicals, and theater. He appears frequently at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has been heard in such roles as Poisson/Adriana Lecouvreur, Scaramuccio/Ariadne auf Naxos, Benvolio/Roméo et Juliette), and several roles in William Kentridge’s acclaimed production of Shostakovich’s The Nose. Frutiger’s varied repertoire also extends to Salome (Atlanta Opera), Die Fledermaus (Fort Worth Opera), Carmen (San Francisco Opera), Manon (Des Moines Metro Opera, Emmy Award-winning production), Madama Butterfly (Sarasota Opera, Opera Memphis, Opera Coeur d’Alene), Ariadne auf Naxos (Sarasota Opera), and Falstaff (Opera Omaha), among many other works. A classically trained actor, Frutiger continues to appear in professional theater, most recently joining Penumbra Theatre (St. Paul, Minnesota) as Chaucer/Adrienne Kennedy’s play The Owl Answers. On the concert stage he has appeared with the San Francisco Symphony (Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol, Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri), the Fresno Philharmonic (Mozart’s Coronation Mass), the Oratorio Society of Minnesota (Handel’s Messiah and Esther, Mozart’s Requiem), and many other ensembles nationwide.
