Q: Who may apply for the Lone Star Vocal Competition?
A: The state competition is open to singers, age 18 through 30 (as of May 9, 2020), who are Texas residents or students. Applicants may not have a participated in any Young Artist or Resident Artist Program with a professional opera company, or, had any prior principal artist contract with an opera company.
Q: What makes the state competition different from the national competition?
A: The state competition is reserved for accomplished young singers with Texas connections and focuses on Texas singers who may have less professional experience than those who enter the national competition. Singers must either have Texas residency or schooling in Texas. Singers will need to provide proof of residency or schooling in their application such as Texas driver’s license, a recent utility bill, Texas based university transcripts, or diploma.
Q: What expenses should applicants be prepared to incur?
A: Applicants should be prepared to cover all travel expenses to and from Dallas, TX as well as food and beverage throughout the competition day.
Q: If selected for semi-finals, when do I need to arrive?
A: The state competition is a one day event. Introductions begin at 9:45am with the competition beginning at 10am. Pianists will be available to rehearse the morning of the competition, prior to introductions. If a selected singer wishes to be in Dallas the evening before the competition, they may reach out to vocalcompetition@dallasopera.org and accommodation suggestions will be provided.
Q: When will I know if I’ve been selected for the semi-finals?
A: Competition semi-finalists will be announced on March 15, 2020.
Q: Who will judge the semi-finals and final competition?
A: The Judges Panel will include Brian Zeger, Jonathan Pell, and David Lomeli.
Q: Will I have an opportunity to receive feedback from the judges?
A: Brian Zeger will be available by request to finalists to offer feedback via email. Please submit requests for feedback to the Artistic Department.
Q: What are the prize amounts?
A: 1st Place $5,000; 2nd Place $3,000; 3rd Place $1,500, and Peoples’ Choice of $1,000

You do not need a paid YAP Tracker account to access the vocal competition application. You can register for a free YAP Tracker account and submit your application. However, there is a non-refundable $20 application fee and is paid to The Dallas Opera
Do not mail applications, recordings, or videos to The Dallas Opera. They will not be returned or accepted as an application.
