Soprano
Role: Mimi in La Bohème
There is such a diverse tradition of music making in South Africa. Of all the different genres, what made you pursue opera?
We have a strong culture of choral music in South Africa and when I heard opera on the radio as a teenager, I fell in love with it.
What advice would you give to young artists trying to break through?
I’d say one must really be into it 100% , be patient and surround themselves with great mentors (singing teachers and coaches)
Who is the most inspirational musician you’ve worked with so far and how have they influenced you?
Maestro Antonio Pappano and Rolando Villazon (they both have an infectious energy and incredible artistry)
What is your personal philosophy in staying driven and positive in such a competitive artform?
I don’t think art is about winning anything or being better than the other person. I’m purely driven by the music and discovering ways to interpret it.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I write poems.. not published yet. I‘m also in a process of a memoir. My life in SA and moving to Europe, it’s not musical, that’s for later.
On a more personal note, what do you do to relax in your downtime?
I love walking, reading ,being in nature, going to the Spa (Sauna + steam room)
What do you hope audiences take away from your performance?
To rediscover Mimi and feel all her emotions.
