DALLAS, JULY 13, 2018 – The Dallas Opera is pleased to announce the promotions of two key figures in the administrative staff. Effective July 1, 2018, Drew Field, TDO’s longtime Technical Director, assumed the new role of Director of Production and Technical Operations. David Lomeli, TDO’s Casting Manager and Manager of the Hart Institute for Women Conductors, is now The Dallas Opera’s Director of Artistic Administration.
Both promotions were approved earlier by The Dallas Opera Board of Directors, as well as by incoming General Director and CEO Ian Derrer.
“Drew has shown himself to be diplomatic whenever possible, yet, tough-as-nails when he had to be, in order to ensure the safety of cast and crew during every moment of every performance for the last several decades,” says Interim General Director and CEO Kern Wildenthal. “The magic of opera depends heavily on the illusion achieved through superb stagecraft, which has hundreds of challenges and thousands of moving parts.
“One of the attractions for the world’s greatest opera artists is knowing that they can come to Dallas to appear in first-rate productions that will be carefully and confidently executed, and beautifully realized,” Wildenthal adds. “Drew Field’s ongoing contributions to the success of The Dallas Opera cannot be overestimated.
Drew Field was educated at the Yale School of Drama. He is a native of Detroit, Maine (a town in rural Maine—not to be confused with the city in Michigan) who has served as Technical Director of The Dallas Opera since 1992. His prior experience in opera included stints as Production Manager of Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, and Technical Director of a host of well-known companies including Fort Worth Opera, Central City Opera (Colorado), The Soviet-American Cultural Exchange, Opera Company of Boston, and Santa Fe Opera.

“David Lomeli’s transition from a stellar career onstage as a starring tenor to the backstage life of an artistic administrator has been quick and utterly remarkable” explains Dallas Opera Music Director Emmanuel Villaume. “David’s encyclopedic knowledge of the repertoire and the field, as well as his impeccable and expert taste in voices, have contributed to his current status as an indispensable reference in our industry.
“It will be a privilege to work at his side, with incoming General Director and CEO Ian Derrer, to capitalize on the success of TDO and bring even more world-class art to Dallas, in order to enhance the quality of life for this vibrant and very diverse community.”
David Lomeli joined The Dallas Opera in July of 2014 as Artistic Coordinator. In June of 2015 he was promoted to Associate Artistic Administrator. In April of 2016, David was promoted to Casting and Hart Institute for Women Conductors Manage where he assisted Music Director Emmanuel Villaume with Casting and Artistic Planning. As the first manager of the Hart Institute for Women Conductors (HIWC), Mr. Lomeli was among those who effectively recruited more than 400 conductors from more than 30 countries in the world to apply, as well as 50 US women administrators. Before joining TDO, David performed as a tenor with many of the world’s leading companies including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Glyndebourne Festival, Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera and San Francisco Opera. David earned an Engineering Degree in Computer Science by the ITESM in Mexico and a post-graduate degree in International Marketing through the Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. He is a recipient of the National Youth Prize in the Arts presented by the Mexican Government and took First Prize in the categories of opera and zarzuela in Plácido Domingo’s 2006 Operalia. Mr. Lomeli also is an alumni of some of the most prestigious training programs for opera artists: the Domigo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at L.A Opera, the Merola Opera Program and Adler Fellowship at the San Francisco Opera, and SIVAM in Mexico City. David is fluent in Spanish, Italian, French, and English, and is making an effort to achieve fluency in Russian. He has been featured as a guest masterclass teacher at the University of Oklahoma, Southern Methodist University, The University of Southern Mississippi, The Juilliard School, SIVAM Mexico and the San Francisco Conservatory.
Both positions became effective on July 1, 2018.
