Sad word from the U.K. today about the passing of Maestro Charles Mackerras from cancer. He was 84. Mackerras became the first guest conductor -ever- for the Dallas Opera in 1971, when he guided our initial production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Jon Vickers (and Austrian soprano Helga Dernesch marking her American debut).
