Realizing that Dallas Opera patrons have more than a passing interest in the future of New York City Opera and our former general director, George Steel; we thought we should include his newly announced plans for the coming season on our blog.
Ronald Blum of Associated Press reports that NYCO will present an abbreviated season of five productions in 2009-2010, beginning with a revival of Hugo Weisgall’s “Esther,” conducted by Music Director George Manahan. Other productions include revivals of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” Chabrier’s “L’Etoile” and Handel’s “Partenope.” There’s also a new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” opening November 8th with Dallas Opera favorite Daniel Okulitch in the title role.
Says George, “I heard him sing ‘Figaro’ down in Dallas. There was something dark and beneath the surface of the voice.”
Scheduling matters aside: Do you think this is an accurate George Steel quote? It seems to me to be either missing a word or two–or including at least one too many.
I’ll try to stop fixating on it and wish NYCO a brilliant comeback season.
