It’s been a favorite story from Cinderella to Busby Berkeley’s Depression-Era cinematic classics: the understudy who goes on at the last minute and comes back a star. Only in this case, Ailyn Perez was the SECOND understudy who went on in the SECOND act – and already a bonafide star. So, let’s just say the dramatic events in Tokyo have burnished her rising star to an altogether dazzling gleam. Sorry…a sudden attack of hyperbole.
However, best of all, Ms. Perez is appearing in the coming months in both a Dallas Opera subscriber appreciation concert and as the young bride-to-be, Zerlina, in our season opening production of “Don Giovanni.” Oh, if after reading the link you are positively determined to see Ailyn and her husband – the equally brilliant Stephen Costello – performing as Violetta and Alfredo in “La traviata,” you’ll have a chance to catch them in the roles in 2012 – at Covent Garden. But why not check out “Don Giovanni” and “Anna Bolena” (in which Stephen stars)…first.
Less drive-time.
