DALLAS, OCTOBER 17, 2018 – Due to continuing wet weather and concerns for the comfort and safety of our patrons, The Dallas Opera has rescheduled the live Carmen simulcast originally scheduled for this Friday.
The free public simulcast at Klyde Warren Park in Downtown Dallas will now be presented on Friday, November 2, 2018 (program begins at 6:30 p.m. /curtain time, 7:30 p.m. from the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.
George Bizet’s gripping nineteenth-century saga of a woman who won’t be possessed will be experienced by park patrons on a large high-definition video screen with English language supertitles. Set in 19th century Seville, Spain, Carmen blends love, lust, jealousy, and obsession with extraordinary music and drama—making it one of the most popular operas ever composed.
The November 2nd Carmen Simulcast is made possible in part by The Enrico Foundation with additional support provided by Texas Instruments.

The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with local broadcast legend Jody Dean and Kristian Roberts, Education Program Senior Manager for The Dallas Opera. Activities include a trivia contest, behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast, and a 1962 Tom & Jerry cartoon, Carmen Get It! (courtesy of WB Classics).
The Dallas Opera will also revive our popular “Carmen Costume Contest” which asks the relevant question: “What Kind of Carmen Are You?”
Whether you envision yourself as a traditional Carmen, a Carmen Electra or a Carmen Miranda—male or female, on two legs or four (yes, pets can enter)—you’re being summoned to the Klyde Warren Park stage in your most imaginative Carmen finery to mark The Dallas Opera’s exciting live simulcast. Judging will take place at the simulcast location around 8:30 p.m. (during first intermission) with prize winners to be determined the old-fashioned way: by audience acclaim. Competitors are advised to bring loud and enthusiastic friends.
The public is encouraged to arrive with time to spare before the 7:30 curtain, and to bring blankets or low lawn-chairs to secure their spot on the lawn. A variety of nearby wining-and-dining options include Savor, serving New American cuisine and assorted food trucks.

Carmen’s stellar international cast includes sultry French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie d’Oustrac in the title role; tenor Stephen Costello in his role debut as Don José; soprano Sara Gartland in her company debut as Micaëla; Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov as Escamillo; sopranos Sarah Tucker as Frasquita and Lindsay Metzger as Mercédès in their company debuts; tenor Rafael Moras as Le Remendado and baritone Corey Crider as Le Dancaïre in their house debuts; bass Ben Wager as Zuniga, and baritone Gideon Dabi in his TDO debut as Morales.
This 1875 masterpiece will be conducted by renowned French guest conductor Pierre Vallet, one of the staff conductors for New York’s Metropolitan Opera. This production by Sir David McVicar is being staged by director Jack Furness in his company debut.

A critically acclaimed production of MADAME BUTTERFLY will be featured at the exciting new venue on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The classic Italian opera by Giacomo Puccini will be simulcast live from the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Dallas Arts District, and is generously sponsored by The Dallas Foundation.
The program begins at 6:30 p.m. hosted by KLUV Radio’s Jody Dean and The Dallas Opera’s Education Program Senior Manager Kristian Roberts. Activities include Family Fun Zone 4:30-6:30 p.m., contests, behind-the-scenes interviews, and a WB Classics cartoon. The opera performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
With poignant melodies, memorable characters and a heart-wrenching storyline, MADAME BUTTERFLY has captivated audiences and dampened handkerchiefs for more than a hundred years. Loosely based on true events in Nagasaki, Japan, the unforgettable opera tells the tale of a young, naïve Japanese woman, Cio-Cio-San, blinded by her love for a callous American naval officer. MADAME BUTTERFLY, with libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, is the third production of The Dallas Opera’s 60th Season.

Lt. B.F. Pinkerton (tenor Gianluca Terranova) rents a wife Cio-Cio-San (soprano Hui He), as well as a house, in a false marriage of convenience. Although he abandons her not long after their wedding, Pinkerton has promised to return. Despite interest from worthy suitors and numerous pleas from her devoted maid Suzuki (mezzo-soprano Manuela Custer) to give up her vigil, the woman nicknamed “Butterfly” remains steadfast (“One Beautiful Day”) during his three-year absence.
This lovely, period production designed by Michael Yeargan (sets and costumes) for San Francisco Opera, will be led by renowned Italian conductor Donato Renzetti and staged by the legendary British director John Copley.
Regarded as one of the most famous new interpreters of the role, Chinese soprano Hui He, makes her Dallas Opera debut as Cio-Cio-San. “The debut of Hui He in the role of Butterfly was sensational: she has convinced not only with her big voice, her wonderful technique and her marvelous timbre, but also she touched with a deep and emotional interpretation. The best Butterfly that you can wish,” (Wiener Zeitung, Austria).
The role of “love ‘em and leave ‘em” Pinkerton will be performed by Italian lyric tenor Gianluca Terranova in his eagerly anticipated company debut. Andrew Alexander of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, recently described the charismatic Italian in another role saying his “youthful, heroic and clear voice perfectly suggests the poetic, dreamy nature of the character…but it can also just as beautifully convey the later anguish and troubled self-awareness that come to the character…”
Internationally acclaimed Italian mezzo-soprano Manuela Custer stars as Suzuki, Butterfly’s confidant and devoted maid. “Vocally, she displayed an impeccable line of singing, with a pleasing and refreshing timbre that contains an ample range of rich colors,” raved Ramon Jacques, Opera Click, of her role as Isabella in our 2009 production of Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers.
American baritone Lucas Meachem stars as Sharpless, the American consul in Nagasaki. “A natural on stage, he…dazzled the audience with the power and beauty of his voice,” (Broadway World).
Winner of multiple international awards, conductor Donato Renzetti has achieved much critical acclaim from around the globe. According to Robert J. Farr of MusicWeb International “The singers do not have to force, particularly when accompanied by a maestro of such experience and sympathy as Donato Renzetti.” George Loomis of The New York Times wrote that the Maestro “conducted a warm, expansive performance,” of a recent production of Tosca (Puccini) for Rome Opera.

DALLAS, TX, OCTOBER 28, 2013 – The Dallas Opera, in partnership with Klyde Warren Park and with support from The Dallas Arts District, is delighted to announce the success of our first-ever artistic collaboration: a live simulcast of one of the most popular operas in the repertoire, Georges Bizet’s 1875 masterpiece, CARMEN, starring the gorgeous and gifted French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine in her American debut!
The Klyde Warren Park Simulcast, the sixth simulcast presented by the Dallas Opera since 2010, enabled at least 3,764 patrons to enjoy an evening of spectacular entertainment, live from the Margaret McDermott Performance Hall of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center!
According to Klyde Warren Park, which monitored the North and South entrances to the Park and conducted clicker counts from the end of the First Act until early in the Second Act, at least 3,764 people saw some portion of the live simulcast last Friday evening. Following the official count, anecdotal evidence from multiple sources indicated the crowd continued to grow.
Early attendees were treated to a silent film rarity, “Carmen Junior,” starring Baby Peggy Montgomery and a WB Classics Tom and Jerry cartoon – “Carmen Get It!” in addition to a Carmen Costume Contest and “Toreador Song Sing-a-Long” hosted by 102.9 Now Radio Personality Jagger and opera expert Dr. Stephen Dubberly.
Backstage interviews were conducted by WFAA’s Ron Corning and Colleen Coyle and views of the red carpet action at the Winspear, where FIRST NIGHT was in full-swing, also added to the sense of “being there.”
The curtain went up promptly at 8:00 p.m. and the crowd rose to its feet for the national anthem, conducted by Dallas Opera Music Director Emmanuel Villaume, prior to the performance.
“One of my primary goals as head of the company continues to be discovering effective new ways to share this extraordinary art form with as broad an audience as possible, while building on an extensive network of collaborations within the Arts District—and beyond,” explained Dallas Opera General Director and CEO Keith Cerny.
“I was delighted, and staggered, to see the astonishing turnout we had last Friday for the first ever simulcast in Klyde Warren Park. This event proved, as if there were any doubts, that opera performed to the highest standard appeals to people of every age and background.
“We were pleased to work closely with our colleagues at Klyde Warren Park and the Dallas Arts District to make our vision for community engagement such an unqualified success!”
“Klyde Warren Park was conceived and designed for these types of activities—activities that bring the performing and visual arts to everyone. These programs help provide a way to promote and showcase art to those who may not otherwise experience these performances,” remarked Jody Grant, Chairman, Woodall Rogers Park Foundation.

“I saw my dream come true with literally thousands of people in Klyde Warren Park watching an opera with rapt fascination,” said Sheila Grant, co-creator of the “Sheila and Jody Grant Opera Discovery” program.
“Families with their small well-behaved children had their eyes glued to the screen. Everyone was so happy: people were offering their chairs and blankets to complete strangers and offering them, wine and food as well.
“I have not been this thrilled or overjoyed since the opening of the Park. Thousands of patrons were clearly enjoying themselves immensely. For many, it was the chance of a lifetime to see a live performance with their families; people of every race, creed and age.
“While I personally can’t sing a note,” Sheila Grant added, “my heart will be singing for months because of this extraordinary evening.”
“All are welcome in the Dallas Arts District, which works to be inclusive and collaborative at every opportunity and continues to set new attendance records each year,” notes Dallas Arts District Executive Director Catherine Cuellar.
“Through this partnership with our stakeholders at The Dallas Opera and Klyde Warren Park, we are helping to cultivate the next generation of opera fans,” she added.

CARMEN was sung in the original French, with English language translations projected above the stage and on the simulcast screen at Klyde Warren Park.
This performance and simulcast launched the Dallas Opera’s sixth production of CARMEN in our 56-year-history.

The Dallas Opera will present an extraordinarily diverse 57th International Season, “By Love Transformed,” sponsored by Texas Instruments Foundation, which will officially kick off when the curtain rises on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. (please note the unusual curtain time). The Dallas Opera’s 2013-2014 Season will open with Georges Bizet’s 1875 masterpiece CARMEN in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Single tickets for the Linda and Mitch Hart Season Opening Night Performance and subsequent Sunday matinees and evening performances begin at the low price of just $19 and are on sale now.
Full season subscriptions are now available for as little as $76 for all four outstanding mainstage productions. The Dallas Opera also has two-performance and three-performance subscriptions available as well.
FIRST NIGHT festivities, presented by NGP Energy Capital, get underway at 5:30 p.m. on the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House Red Carpet at the AT&T Performing Arts Center located in the Dallas Arts District. The lavish dinner is 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. followed by Carmen at 8:00 p.m. The emcees will be faces—and voices—you already know and love, and celebrity guests that evening will include a contingent of top-tier fashion designers accompanying their head-turning models. Together, they will elevate people-watching to the status of art with their “opera-inspired” couture gowns!
