Mark your calendars and set your DVR for “Great Performances at the Met” on KERA, Channel 13, January 20th at 8 PM. The performance in question is the recent David McVicar production of Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” starring Anna Netrebko in the title role. Here’s more from the PBS website: “The opera, a compelling dramatization of the tragic final days of Anne Boleyn—whose husband Henry VIII spurns her and has her sentenced to death—is directed by David McVicar and conducted by Marco Armiliato. The cast includes Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Anna’s romantic rival, Giovanna (Jane Seymour); Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov as the cruel Enrico (Henry VIII); American tenor Stephen Costello as Anna’s first love, Lord Percy; and American mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford as the queen’s devoted page Smeton.”
Of course, it’s of particular interest to those of us who attend the Dallas Opera to note that it’s tenor Stephen Costello reprising the role he sang to great acclaim here in Dallas last season. There’s another local connection mentioned on the PBS site: “This production of Anna Bolena was made possible by a generous gift from Mercedes and Sid R. Bass.”
