Stephen Sondheim is excoriating the decision to revise portions of George Gershwin’s always controversial masterpiece, “Porgy & Bess,” in a new production opening at American Repertory Theatre. However, longtime critic for the “Philadelphia Inquirer,” David Patrick Stearns, thinks the original will stand–not because the revisions aren’t any good–but because the tried-and-true ending simply works better.
