In the last two weeks there haven’t been a lot of opera performances to attend, so I utilized the time to catch up on my other great passion—going to the movies.
So far I have seen The Descendants, Hugo, Happy Feet 2, My Week with Marilyn, Like Crazy, The Muppets and The Skin I Live In. A very eclectic bunch of films, I know, but each of them interesting in one way or another. You can imagine my surprise, though, when near the end of the film, Eric, the little lost penguin in Happy Feet 2, burst into “E lucevan le stelle” from Act III of Tosca ! The text had been altered to reflect the situation in the film, but it was the complete aria, almost exactly as Puccini had written it. Puccini even got a credit during the end titles !
