DALLAS, MAY 8, 2012 – The Dallas Opera is happy to offer this year’s highly anticipated, casual summer events series, BARITONES & BEACHBALLS, brought to you by Friends of the Dallas Opera. One of our most popular offerings, this series is designed to keep the summer entertainment fun for everyone. Every event is either no-cost or low-cost, and the series includes timely, topical lectures hosted by WRR 101.1 FM Host Kurt Rongey, special networking and social events, enticing tastings and cool, casual movie nights at Studio Movie Grill’s Royal location—in partnership with Dallas Film Society.
Most of these events are absolutely free, although food events require a nominal fee in order to cover costs. The 2012 “Baritones & Beachballs” Series kicks-off on Tuesday, June 5th at 6:30 PM at the Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre, 6th Floor Patron Lounge (2400 Flora Street, Dallas 75201) with a Discussion on Verdi’s Aida in partnership with WRR, Classical 101.1 FM, for a lively, in-depth discussion each month about the music of the operas in the “Pursuits of Passion” Season and how it relates to the other masterpieces created by the composers.
Other highlights include the “Cheesy Opera Happy Hour” Series conducted in partnership with Scardello Artisan Cheese Shop (3511 Oak Lawn, Dallas 75219). Cheese Monger and owner Rich Rogers will take us on a journey through each opera during the months of June, July and August. “Wine Wednesdays” will take us to Chef/Owner Abraham Salum’s restaurant Komali (4152 Cole Ave Dallas, 75204) where we will be whisked away to Egypt, Beijing and Lake Como with Chef Salum’s hand-picked wines. “Movie Night” each month will be held at the Studio Movie Grill (Royal Location, 11170 N. Central Expressway) with a free movie screening in partnership with Dallas Film Society.
New to Baritones and Beachballs will be our monthly “Cooking@theOpera” class in partnership with Central Market Plano. Each month TDO will bring a guest chef out to teach you how to prepare foods related to each of the operas part of our “Pursuits of Passion” 2012/2013 Season. This is one class you won’t want to miss!

TDO in partnership with Scardello Artisan Cheese will bring you the “Cheesy Opera Happy Hour”. Individual Happy Hour’s: $15 per person for each event. Wine Flight
Looking to expand your wine knowledge? This is the summer ticket for you! Join TDO and Executive Chef Abraham Salum of Komali Contemporary Mexican Cuisine to sip, swirl and savor your way to a greater understanding of the nectar of the gods! Chef will also create unique small bites, some exclusively for these tastings, to complement the wine variety inspired by the opera of the month. Individual Tasting Events: $20 per person for each event.
