The Producers Guild of America just announced the list of the ten films nominated for best picture of the year, and I am delighted to say that I have managed to see all of them— many of them over the holidays (just in case you spotted me at the NorthPark AMC, the Magnolia or the Angelika during the last few weeks…)
Selecting just one of these films is going to be very hard.
The nominees (which are regarded as a harbinger of the Academy Award nominations set to be announced later this month) are:
The Artist
Bridesmaids
The Descendants
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Help
Hugo
The Ides of March
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
War Horse
I can’t pick just one, but my five favorites from this list are The Artist, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hugo, Midnight in Paris and War Horse. These five films couldn’t be more different but each are successful in their own special way.
I really liked Dragon Tattoo when I saw it, but I didn’t appreciate how skillfully crafted it was until I saw the Swedish version on my Kindle Fire ( which was a wonderful Christmas present, by the way) over the weekend. I think that the American version is a much more coherent telling of the story and the characters are better developed.
