Sometimes you luck out.
Although no one was happy to see Dallas native Michael Yeargan withdraw from the production team for the world premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s MOBY-DICK (for personal reasons), we were exceptionally pleased to learn that a terrific talent was stepping into the breach: two-time Tony Award nominee Robert Brill. Most recently, Brill was nominated for his spectacularly stylized vintage New York set for the Broadway revival of “Guys and Dolls.” But his list of notable credits is as long as my forearm.
A founding member of San Diego’s cutting edge Sledgehammer Theatre, Mr. Brill has designed for The Whitney Museum of American Art, Lincoln Center Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout, New York Stage and Film, New York Theatre Workshop, The Guthrie, American Conservatory Theater, the Mark Taper Forum and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, to name a few. Mr. Brill’s extensive Broadway credits include scenic designs for A Streetcar Named Desire (2005), The Good Body and Assassins (2004), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Design for Living (2001) and his critically acclaimed design for the 1998 revival of Cabaret.
Among Brill’s opera credits is the scenic design for San Diego Opera’s Wozzeck. We’re glad to read in the San Diego Opera blog (sorry, SDO, I tried to link; it’s a tempestuous computer day!) that Brill is credited with being as pleasant to work with as he is talented.
Would it be…yes, it would, but I’ll say it anyway: “Welcome aboard!”
