Juan José de León, who is making his company debut in our next production, “Romeo and Juliet,” got a dispensation to travel to San Antonio last weekend to compete in the Southwest Region Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions – and won! The Corpus Christi-born tenor earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music from UNT and a Master’s in Vocal Performance from SMU, where he participated for two years in our collaborative Emerging Artists Program. Juan, who will be singing the role of Benvolio, also placed Third in the Dallas Opera Guild’s 2010 Vocal Competition for up-and-coming young singers with ties to the Lone Star State.
In addition to his debut, that means Juan will be preparing for the semi-final round of this prestigious competition, to be held in March in New York City.
Sweet!
