One half of my brain was extremely pleased to see the remarkable and remarkably gracious Juan José de León touted in “Opera Fresh” as a young singer who mmmmmmmight be the next Juan Diego Floréz. However, the other half of my brain immediately revived memories of young baseball pitchers with “million dollar arms” and I thought to myself, “Slow down, people! Give the man a chance to develop his considerable talent before comparing him – even theoretically – to an operatic superstar.”
I’m curious: Do you think such high expectations advance young singing careers or are they likely to create unbearable (and unfair) pressure? Or am I being over-protective of our brilliant Emerging Artist?
