From the Desk of Artistic Director Jonathan Pell

I am, of course,  looking forward to some non Dallas Opera musical events  this spring, among which are some concerts at the Dallas Symphony.

When it was announced I couldn’t help but notice that the Dallas Symphony has performances coming up  March 29 – 31 of the Bach Saint Matthew Passion, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, and with a wonderful line up of soloists, including Morgan Smith as “Christ” (who was “Starbuck” in the Dallas Opera’s world premiere production of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick.)   This should be wonderful.

Later in the spring, on May 11 and 13, the Dallas Symphony is giving concert performances of Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio.  The last time the piece was performed by the Dallas Opera (in 2002) the production featured a young Scottish soprano named Lisa Milne in her United States debut in the role of “Marzelline.”

When the Dallas Symphony performs it, Lisa Milne has been engaged to sing the leading role of “Leonore.”   I haven’t heard Lisa in the intervening ten years, so I can hardly wait to her in it!
