What “The Lighthouse” and the Tony Awards Have in Common

by Suzanne Calvin

Answer: Scenic Designer Beowulf Boritt.

One of the Dallas Theater Center’s hottest designers is up for a 2011 Tony Award for “Best Scenic Design of a Musical,” “The Scottsboro Boys” (see the above photo from the “New York Daily News”).  Mr. Boritt is also designing the new Dallas Opera production of Peter Maxwell Davies’ “The Lighthouse” to launch our chamber opera series in 2012. DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty will be making his opera debut as stage director. The work will also mark the Dallas Opera’s  inaugural bow in the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre.

Here’s more on the nomination from the Front Row at D magazine.

Bonus points awarded for knowing who the Tony Awards are named for.  I’ll give you a hint: Tony is a…she.
