Callas Nominations Announced

by Suzanne Calvin

Oh, you lucky renewing subscribers! Those of you who have already renewed for the “Tragic Obsessions” Season (2011-2012) of the Dallas Opera have the extraordinary opportunity -- and responsibility, to be frank -- to sift through a season of outstanding debut performances and determine which one made the strongest impression on you.

In other words, it’s time for you to vote on the “Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year.” Even if you’re not a renewing subscriber, you are bound to be interested in this year’s stellar list of nominees. Here’s the word from Jerome Weeks at KERA’s “Art and Seek” blog, Peter Simek at D magazine’s “Front Row” blog, and the lead news headline from OperaOnline.us.

While this year’s voting was difficult, TDO staging Boris Godunov was magnificent. I’ve only seen it once before — at The Met — and I am so proud to say that TDO’s production was just as exciting and vocally superb! So, with kudos to Laura Claycomb, my vote was for B.G.

In regard to the Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year: I drove from Houston to see Laura Claycomb in Rigoletto. Stellar production, but I would have driven up to see Laura Claycomb in any production. Thank you, Dallas Opera!
