Mortier in Madrid

by Suzanne Calvin

To be honest, I’m not sure why the matriculations of opera impresario Gerard Mortier have moved from a moderately interesting international soap opera to the blog equivalent of “Must-See TV”…but, they have.

The gentleman who left NYCO without so much as a peck on the cheek is now off to sunny Spain!  Let’s hope the government subsidies at Teatro Real are enough to keep him there.  Speaking of which, he doesn’t start until January 2010.  Just think of all the things that could go awry between now and then!

I wish Mr. Mortier the best of luck and hope that Dallas Opera has 1/100th of his commitment to 20th century opera that doesn’t sound like warmed-over Puccini (i.e. 99% of American operas) that he does. Considering the disgraceful and cowardly way that Dallas Opera caved in the Silver Tassie fiasco, I have my doubts.
