On the Verge of Football…er…I mean, Opera Season Again!

by Suzanne Calvin

I just might have to get on the phone to the box office of FW Opera and get tickets for “Amahl” to see and hear for myself. I can’t think of a reason in the world why former Houston Oiler Lawrence Harris shouldn’t be a terrific opera singer, with natural talent, training and no-doubt superb physical conditioning. Still, it is a bit of a head-turner, isn’t it? Get more details here.

Actually, there’s been an interesting pipeline in recent years from the world of sports to the world of opera. Victor Ryan Robertson, who dazzled audiences as “Sportin’ Life” in last season’s Porgy & Bess is a former tennis pro. And, if memory serves, Gordon Hawkins -- who sang the title role -- initially pursued a baseball career while Brandon Jovanovich (Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana a few seasons back) played college football!

Perhaps not so surprising after all.
